Shells, Cocoons and Clouds

This Spring INDEXG is pleased to debut Xiaojing Yan's solo exhibition in Toronto. Entitled Shells, Cocoons and Clouds, it is an installation of forms - of light-weight sculptures resembling life in nature.
Xiaojing Yan is a Chinese artist who moved to Toronto just a few years ago. As an artist migrating from China to North America, both her identity and her work pass through the complex filters of different countries, languages, and cultural expectations. For Yan, to continue making art is a transmigration process: a Buddhist concept related to the reincarnation of the spirit into a new body after death. From this emerges Shells, Cocoons and Clouds - an exhibition revealing her new endeavours in art. By employing the traditional craft of lantern making, her attempt in interweaving material and technique brings her work to a brave new level - a self that adapts changes and growth yet aware and protected from the harsh environment. The effort is both effective and spectacular.
Xiaojing Yan obtained B.F.A. in Decorative Art in Nanjing Art Institute, China in 2000. In 2007 she obtained her M.F.A. in Sculpture in Indiana University of Pennsylvania, USA. She received grants from Canada Council for the Arts as well as Ontario Arts Council and Toronto Arts Council in Canada (2008/9). She just had her major solo exhibition in Phoenix Art Gallery, Nanjing, China in the Winter of 2009.
