The Second-read and other Negotiation Matters series is one of a three volume photo works by leekazing. The other two volumes are dot hong kong and Toronto Myth.
dot hong kong is an on-going series Lee started in 2004. Originally for an invitational exhibition, dot hong kong is a large body of work that Lee re-photographs images and snap shots he took in the past 25 years. An epic, in which he lays his Past and Memories. In 2008, Lee began two bodies of new work that eventually join dot hong kong as a triology: Toronto Myth and The Second-read and other Negotiation Matters. While Toronto Myth speaks of the Present and Future, in the latter work Lee photographs books from his own library - his own Personal Belongings, he said, is a long trail bonded with his growth and every twist and turn of the journey.
In The Second-read and other Negotiation Matters series, each photograph/book encounters an individual relationship. Some of the books are from his favorite artists that have influenced his thinking or ways of seeing, some are by the artists he (his gallery) represents. Some are originally aimed as tools (such as computer manuals), some are new novels he is still reading and some are written by his friends with the book covers designed by Lee.
Each of the three volumes of work will consist of over thousands of images. Each image is a small dot that forms part of a big picture.
leekazing is one of the founders of INDEX G. A noted photo based artist of Hong Kong, he moved to Toronto in 1997. Lee set up LEE Ka-sing gallery in 2000 and represents a handful of high caliber Asian artists. In the fall of 2008, Lee relinquished the idea of running LEE Ka-sing gallery in a physical location, instead he chose to become an art dealer. He will continue to curate exhibitions for INDEX G and other institutions.
Starting a fresh chapter, Lee will devote more time to pursue creative writings in addition to his large scale personal photo projects - a turning point from his first ten years in Toronto during which he remained anonymous as an artist. Currently he uses leekazing as signature for his visual-based work.
