INDEXG presents "More Art about Rails and Sails" by Toronto-based artist Rupen Kunugus. For this exhibition Rupen has produced 3 sets of artwork with themes relating to rails, targets and sails.
“Mainline” is a suite of his continuing work on Canadian landscape. These works consist of eight 20”x 20”x 1-3/8” M.D.F. panels with projected, then drawn, lines which are routed, filled (with red glaze), sanded and clear-coated to represent a mapping of rail lines across Canada. Rupen takes great joy in the differing interpretations that viewers have of these open-ended, monochromatic line images. His second set of works is titled “New Targets”. These small paintings no longer resemble target images. The Gouache on paper works, with scored and folded construction and wood core, are unprotected by frame or glass. Quietly and confidently exposed to their surroundings, they have shifted off their parallel centres. The third and most challenging works are the three multi-panel painted sculptures. These works are images of sails taken from photographs, projected to cover an area of 5’x 5’. Patterns are made from the projections and produced into colour forms of differing shades to create these contemporary monochromatic works. These beautiful and poetic forms sail on the gallery walls under imaginary blue sky and whispery light winds.
Rupen Kunugus was born in Istanbul in 1960. He came to Canada when he was nine, and became a Canadian citizen in 1974. An artist and curator, Rupen ran "Natural Light Window" gallery, which consisted of two storefront windows of his former house at 506 Adelaide Street West from 1997 to 2006. His visual artwork has been exhibited in over 50 group shows and several solo exhibitions in Toronto, New York and Seoul. |
