Inherent Truths showcases recent figurative paintings and mixed media drawings from Montreal based artist Tammy Gibeau Salzl. Described as “sensual”, “haunting” and “eerie”, Gibeau Salzl’s work meshes history, culture and psyche to explore the issues that influence the human condition. Her work examines themes of identity, gender, sexuality, power relations, the costs of artifice, consumption, the allure and fear of the forbidden, family, and the meaning and value of ‘self’ and ‘other’. Underlying this is an expression of her interest in the relationship between social conformism and autonomy, greed and sacrifice, the fictional and the real, civilization and the natural world.
Tammy Gibeau Salzl was born in Edmonton, Alberta where she exhibited extensively, including solo exhibitions at Latitude 53 and Harcourt House Centre for the Arts, and moved to Montreal in 2008. Her work has also shown at The Propeller Centre for the Arts in Toronto and she has an upcoming residency and solo exhibition at the Odd Gallery in Dawson City, Yukon in 2009.
"Above all, my practice is influenced by my own experiences within our global simultaneity, an intense inner world and life, my need to translate that somehow and relate it to the small, individual universes others carry with them and, ultimately, to navigate our world."
