OPENING RECEPTION: Thursday, July 24, 2008 - 7-10 pm |

In a world where priority is given to the individual, to collaborate is an act of rebellion, a forceful weapon to the ego. Through acts of convergence, Z’otz* Collective creates quirky and often outrageous images which explore with humour, ideas of transition, displacement, and the immigrant experience. “Z’otz* is far from a hierarchical creative endeavour and closer to an exercise in equality”, writes Julie Oakes (Headbones, the Drawers), about the group’s collaborative practice. The reaches of Z’otz*’s imagination take one to bizarre lands where hybrid beasts and wild characters induce an invention of extraordinary tales. In this way, the viewer is part of the collaborative process.
Z’otz* will exhibit large-scale works on paper for the first time, in “Caressing the Chase”, along with a collection of smaller drawings in watercolour, pencil and collage.
In 2004, Z’otz* Collective was formed in Toronto by Nahúm Flores, Erik Jerezano, and Ilyana Martínez, three artists with Latin American backgrounds. For consecutive years, Z’otz* has received awards at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition. Last summer the Collective traveled to Serbia for a multidisciplinary art residency. In the fall, the artists will create a drawing installation for Nuit Blanche 2008 at the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art in Toronto. |
