The fear of being an adult
Jemma Duyeon Kim
3/18/2008 - 3/30/2008
G+ GALLERIES

OPENING RECEPTION: Thursday, March 20, 2008 - 7-10 pm

The fear of being an adult is a series of new work by Korean artist Jemma Duyeon Kim. It is based on the traditional rite of passage ceremony of different countries.

The ceremonies were mostly cruel and merciless. It shows the many obstacles towards an adult's life. The rite of passage ceremony could be a celebration of becoming adults, but it is more close to a kind of preview of the harsh reality of growing up.

Although these scary ceremonies are almost nonexistent in our modern society, the fear of becoming an adult has not diminished. To be an adult is to be responsible for one's daily bread and lodging, to obey the laws and observe morality standards. There will be punishments due to negligence of certain rules. Growing up, to the artist, is a scary thing and she chooses to express her anxiety through this series of limited edition silk screen prints. The sources are from traditional stories from Japan, Korea, Bali and the American Indians.

Jemma Duyeon Kim is a young artist from Korea. Majoring in illustration, she will be graduating from the Ontario College of Art and Design this year.
