...And ALL THAT HIP-HOP: A Homage to an Urban Odyssey

OPENING RECEPTION: Thursday, January 10, 2008 - 7-10 pm

“…..And ALL THAT HIP-HOP: A Homage to an Urban Odyssey”

Passion, curiosity and devotion have prompted me to create a photographic homage to Hip-hop culture. Through exploring the history of the cultural movement that has so embraced today’s youth for the last two decades, I discovered that Hip-hop consists of more than just cars, “bling”, violence, sex, drugs and money often reflected in the lyrics of popular mainstream artists.

“…And ALL THAT HIP -HOP: A Homage to an Urban Odyssey ’’ aims to reflect on the early days of Hip-hop when it was innovative, creative and non-violent. Hip-hop is a style of music composed of rhyming vocals by an EMCEE. The EMCEE would often rap/rhyme over beats/scratching performed by THE DJ on a set of turntables. In turn, BBOYS AND BGIRLS ( Break dancers) would battle and show off their skills during the “break session“ of the music being played. GRAFFITI was often used to promote local break dancing crews, emcees and street life. These are all known as the four elements of HIP-HOP.

The coloured photograph series depicts all the four elements of Hip-hop by incorporating Graffiti, Dancers, Emcees and a DJ in a battle of choreographed and freestyle routines. Each photograph builds upon the isolation of one or more of the elements. The images intend to engage the viewer into each action scene by exploring the progression of the battle through movement and narrative.

“…And ALL THAT HIP-HOP: A Homage to an Urban Odyssey” is dedicated to my love of all things Hip-hop- it touches my love for music, dance and visual art. It is a eclectic genre that is rich in its history spanning more then 20 years in urban culture. The series strives to bring the movement into the foreground of the visual arts world, rarely seen in mainstream art institutions by appreciating Hip-hop culture as a bona fide art form. I hope to show the original Hip-hop untainted by commercialism in it’s true form and not what it is today.
