The Mechanized Gesture: New Digital Prints by Alex Livingston
Alex Livingston
8/28/2007 - 9/16/2007
G+ GALLERIES

OPENING RECEPTION: Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 7-10 pm

This suite of recent prints by Halifax-based artist Alex Livingston—never before exhibited in Toronto—features digitally generated drawings outputted as large-scale prints on photo paper. The resulting images present marks and gestures as a hybrid visual experience that simultaneously references drawing, painting and photography.

Generated by electronic drawing tablets and computer software, these digital images of skeins of volumetric, cord-like lines, looping through the print’s clearly fictive space, create a persuasive, three dimensional field, animated by complex, gesture-like entanglements of line—line digitally thickened and rounded into what look like industrially-fabricated cables. Part gigantic electronic doodles, part expansive, painting-like gestures, the interwoven cable-forms ultimately generate a new kind of visual territory that often (and inexplicably) seems strangely familiar (the spirit of Jackson Pollock stirs somewhere within Livingston’s now cooled-down freneticism). The resulting digital structures—hypothetical and provisional—evoke numerous associations, coming to resemble, as Livingston puts it, “magnified patterns of organic life, as well as industrially textured extrusions."

Alex Livingston was born in Kingston, Ontario, and currently lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He received a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1983 and an MA Fine Arts from the Chelsea College of Art and Design in London, England in 1995. Alex Livingston has exhibited his paintings in numerous solo and group exhibitions in public and commercial galleries across Canada. He has also participated in group exhibitions in England and the United States. A visiting artist and panelist in various university and gallery settings, he is presently Associate Professor of Fine Arts, and Chair of Fine Arts at NSCAD. He has received grants from the Canada Council and the government of Nova Scotia, and has undertaken artist's residencies in Canada and England. Livingston's work is in private, corporate and public collections. (Gary Michael Dault)
