In the second part of Sur(reality), a curated exhibition organized for CONTACT 2007, celebrated Korean photographer Park Hong-chun presents work from three different series.
"Seoul III" and "APT" are large-scale works from the "mini-max" exhibition (Shiseido Gallery 2005). In "Seoul III", a huge piece of photograph measuring 14.5 ft. x 9.5 ft. is formed by eight separate panels made up of vertical and horizontal rows of 35 mm contact prints. The images are endless repetitions of certain motifs of car plates (Seoul III) and lights from windows of apartments (APT). At normal distance, the three photographs in "APT" look like huge black skies filled with twinkling stars. In the work shown in this series, time and space are displayed quantitatively, and one is overwhelmed by the sheer quantity.
In "Open", a series of colour photographs produced in 1993, Park explored emotional journeys of the divided boundary of North and South Korea. Cruising along the expressways and photographing with slow shutter speed, park was compelled to examine the blurry lines between the country's splitting landscape.
"Traces" is another series of photographs Park took in Australia, on the seashores of Melbourne and Sydney. For Park Hong-chun, the sense of time is reflected in his collection of “light” which appears as special colours through long exposure and reciprocity law. The more time elapsed, the fewer impurities left in the frame, allowing people to see farther and deeper into a space beyond reality. He wanders in the cave of time looking for his ephemeral memory. His photographs of sea, sky and benches reveal a desire for roots, similar to his longing for his mother who died long time ago.
Park Hong-chun has exhibited in Korea and many major cities, in Tokyo, New York, Sydney, Denmark, to name a few. His work has appeared in The Kwangiu Biennale, FotoFest in Houston and Odense Foto Triennale in Denmark. Park is currently working and living in Toronto. He is represented by LEE Ka-sing gallery in Canada. |
