INDEXG opens four new exhibitions in early March: Jim Allen's Water- colour Pen and Ink drawings, Richard Cj Li's mixed media work, Han Xu's oil and mixed-media paintings and the GOOD Edition series, with new work by Harvey Chan.
For the past few years, the "accidental" drawings of Jim Allen's have provided testaments to his inner emotions and subconsciousness, a channel releasing negative energies and externalizing his hidden dreams and widest imaginations - mostly territories where demons and goblins reside. The outcome is an exuberant outburst of over 50 large drawings, all intermingle with surrealistic narratives that bespeak the artist's influences: Picasso, Miro, inspiration from his photographic projects and nonetheless, some secretive, interesting personal codes. Another artist Harvey Chan, also draws from subconscious with motivation from exterior source. By fusing the moods (in literally Chinese characters) with free form drawings he has created hybrids called "Worganics" (word and organic). One must not ignore an interesting phenomenon - the two genres of drawing are somewhat linked to popular culture - cartoon (as in Jim Allen's) and manga (as in Harvey Chan's). You are also invited to experience Richard Cj Li's mixed media work "Beyond Vision", a project that addresses the five senses, particularly the issue of vision and touch. Richard Cj Li is a current graphic design/advertising major at George Brown College. Meet Han Xu's oil and mixed-media paintings in a series entitled "Transformation". Han, a native Beijing now based in Toronto, has explored the "Royal Power" for years in a series called "Dynasty". "Transformation" is a variant of the work. To celebrate the opening of the above- mentioned shows, San Murata and Tony Quarington, a violin and a guitar jazz duo, and friends of Jim Allen's, will play for the artists and guests. Don't forget to mark your calendar: Thursday, March 6, from 7 to 10 pm. |

'Worganic Forms' (word-organic) is a new series of work for the Toronto-based artist Harvey Chan to revisit the elegant forms of Chinese characters with his abstract, free flowing organic forms. In the creative process, ink drawing on traditional rice paper were enhanced with digital treatment. We see a bridge between the old and the new, the ever evolution of human and his condition. |
Harvey has his roots from China (Hong Kong), a mega city with its famous harbour open to the Pacific ocean, and neighbouring cities that are full of urban myths, Manga and Anime cult. His recent art 'Worganic Forms', dedicated to the GOOD Edition series, skillfully displays such embrace and mergence of both ancient and contemporary cultures. Harvey has established himself as an illustrator since graduated from Ontario College of Art and Design. For many years, Harvey's diversified approach on commercial assignments is also greatly reflected on his personal work. Figurative work has always been a primary subject in his drawings, paintings and sculptures for a long time. in recent years, spiritual and natural forms has slowly emerged in his work and taking the central stage. Fantastical and hybrid forms are found in Harvey's most recent creations. In the GOOD Edition series, the chinese characters Anxiety, Compliance, Exit, Feeling, Spirit and Thoughts unite with free organic forms he so well-acquainted with in a rhythmic, enigmatic and cosmic dance. |
