Land and City - through the eyes of five artists
2008 is a good year in every sense. Numerically (to the Chinese) it means easy to prosper. To INDEXG, we continue to hustle and buzz with many substantial shows. We begin the new season with the work of five artists who are working on the ever-green theme of land and city. Andrew Tutte, an artist returning from Germany, recounts his journey with large scale work using oil in combination with sand, straw, ash and gold leaf to depict the "transitional" landscapes between Europe and Canada. Christina Leslie explores Hip-hop culture with a series of colour photographs that aims to reflect on the early days when Hip-hop was innovative, creative and non-violent. Leung Chi-wo reconstructs the streets of New York through his pin-hole photographs, which he cuts out and builds into "pop-art" like 3-D sculptures. The young figurative Japanese painter tomolennon participates in GOOD Edition with some of the fine portraits he painted depicting loneliness in the lives of city people. Finally Hiroshi Yamamoto, a long-time Torontonian, paints the city its Winter blues in exceptionally gleeful spirits. This series of miniature pastel and water-colour drawings shows familiar landmarks such as the "Flat Iron Building" on Wellington Street and a window view of the CN Tower. Predicted to have warmer weather in the coming Thursday, please come and join us celebrate the opening of all of the above exhibitions on January 10, 7 to 10 pm at INDEXG.

Read Lee Ka-sing - the founder of GOOD Edition writes on GOOD Edition. His new column (in Chinese) at ARTPOST. |
One of the most exciting young figurative painters today, tomolennon is creating art about people and city life that is both settling comfortably and seductive. His art reflects our ever-so-lonely city lives and sufferings. And his figures lurk in shadowy yet colorful atmospheres ignited by expressionistic highlights, deftly moving between representation and abstraction.
A completely self-taught artist, tomolennon was born in 1973 in Japan and has been living in Toronto, Canada. He was presented with the "Best Artist" - award from NOW Magazine in 2002 and EYE Magazine in 2003 as the best local visual artist of the year. |
