This Sunday 14th is the last day of a number of exhibitions including Evolving Forms by Harvey Chan and Yumi Onose. People who had attended the opening reception still applauded the dance and music performed that evening and here we want to thank Keiko (the dancer) and Uros and his friends who came to perform the drumming. Jim Allen, who also exhibited at the same time with 7 pieces in the GOOD Edition series, did some excellent shots of Keiko. Browse installation views of Jim Allen's exhibition of GOOD Edition(s) at G+ GALLERIES Our next round of exhibitions pertains to the physical and mental state of beings - the interconnection between different art mediums and the merging of real world and virtual worlds. The exhibitions "Resonance" by Noriko Saito and "Industrial Landscape" by Ying-Kit Chan are shown in parallel to give audience entry points to a fresh, spiritual experience. The paintings in "Resonance" were inspired by the noted Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu (1930 - 1996)'s music. Saito uses the sound-world of Takemitsu, as well as the evocative titles the composer borrowed from literature, poetry and art, to create her own visual expressions. Ying-Kit Chan explores the mundane urban landscapes using snapshots of industrial monuments and scenes. These forms are shrouded with charcoal marks and ink washes and produced as smooth surface c-prints. Appearing tranquil and aloof, the images present a sanctuary for the observers to meditate and reflect. Coincidentally the GOOD Edition series continues with 6 photographic images by Shozo Ushiroguchi that bespeak Toronto's urban landscapes - nature and the man-made and their co-existence. Finally all eyes will turn on the abstract paintings by the two and a half years old genius Ansel Yamamoto Mitic, who thinks art is play and is not apologetic in riding bicycle on his artwork.

(Transformations By Shozo Ushiroguchi) Human built structures, constructs...whether for living or business or industry...after a time these structures become part of nature: It may take a longer or a shorter time for this to happen...as much time as it takes for nature to come back and the structure to be reclaimed. Buddhist philosophy says all matter is in a state of transformation. Many built structures are decommissioned prematurely: Smokestacks still in tact no longer smoking; queues of barrels with forgotten contents. Some structures continue past their prime: aging pipework moves product from a postwar chemical plant; billboards proclaim peeling ad campaigns. And all the while, graffiti springs up wherever fresh wall space waits. The motif of my photographs is the composition of incongruous elements - reflections cast by office building become shadows thrown by trees. Unlikely congregations of man-made structures and natural structures abound. I try to reconcile them through my camera frame. |
