Summer has gone too fast, but no complaints. Considering other parts of the world which are still suffering from weather change, Toronto is a piece of heaven. We have our little piece of heaven too, at INDEXG - showering with a number of exceptional Fall exhibitions at the end of August. Co-incidentally there are two exhibitions which are collaborative "Extinct and Desired Intruders", and two more which are at the opposite ends of technology "The Mechanized Gesture and Faster Than Thought".
High tech versus low tech - Halifax-based artist Alex Livingston exhibits his digitally generated drawings "The Mechanized Gesture" outputted as large-scale prints on photo paper, whereas China-based artists Henrik Drescher (who has been influential in the U.S. for the past 15 years) and Wu Wing Yee cover the gallery walls with their raw, experimental, mixed-media canvases and soft sculptures (Faster Than Thought). In the collaborative spirit - photographer Elizabeth Siegfried and poet Aleah Sato work on "Extinct", a sequence of thirteen images and poems that reflects upon the slow vanishing of the natural world and our place in it. The three members of Z'otz* Collective - Nahœm Flores, Erik Jerezano and Ilyana Mart’nez meet every Sunday to create collaboratively, mixed-media drawings marked by a fusion of their personalities and working styles. Their latest efforts can be seen in "Desired Intruders". All four exhibitions, with artists attending, will open on Thursday, August 30, from 7-10 pm. A must-not-miss event of the city.

Smoke is a young art collective comprised of European photographers and
artists. The themes that they focus on are freely associative, the
writing distinct, the expression uncompromising with an approach marked
by questions concerning the new methods of circulation and presentation
of photo-based images. The newly-formed Smoke collective is currently
exhibiting at the Arles Rencontres 2007 in France.

The recent work of Halifax-based artist Alex Livingston is generated by electronic drawing tablets and computer software, outputted as large-scale prints on photo paper. These digital images looks like industrially-fabricated cables. "Part gigantic electronic doodles, part expansive, painting-like gestures," wrote Gary Michael Dault, "the interwoven cable-forms ultimately generate a new kind of visual territory that often (and inexplicably) seems strangely familiar (the spirit of Jackson Pollock stirs somewhere within Livingston’s now cooled-down freneticism)."
